Major Impediments
· The leachate generated from the kodungaiyur municipal solid waste dump site maintained by the corporation is let into adjoining kodungaiyur channel which ultimately joins the Buckingham canal.
· The untreated effluent which is generated from villivakkam slaughter house is let into the drain that connects the Buckingham canal. Similarly, the pathogenic untreated effluent from Pulianthope slaughter house is let into otteri nullah which joins the canal.
· According to government, there are 183 outfalls in Buckingham canal basin.
· It is estimated that 40-50% of the daily untreated sewage outflow from the city pours into Buckingham canal.
· The Canal harbours dense growth of water Hyacinth, which helps breed the most deadly varieties of Mosquitoes.
· The major portion of Chennai mass rapid transit system (MRTS) railway line from Chennai beach to Velacherry goes on top of the Buckingham canal narrowing the width considerably.
