A Study on the Conditions of Children in Tea Gardens of Alipurduar District of West Bengal
A report of a study conducted jointly by ActionAid India West Bengal regional office and the West Bengal State Commission for Protection of Child Rights. The study covered more than 3700 children and their parents living in 20 tea gardens in the district. The major findings of the study are:
-- Child labour is rampant in the region
-- 40 cases of missing of children aged less than 20 years come to light
-- Rate of drop out among girls is as high as 71%
-- Around 56% of tea workers are from tribal communities, having monthly income of less than Rs. 3000/-
-- Health service and drinking water are big problems in the areas.
