Sir Thomas More

Sir Thomas More—who died on July 6th 1535—wrote "Utopia" as a treatise "of a republic's best state". The term, often referring to an ideal society, has been popular ever since.    He was an English lawyer, philosopher, author and statesman as well as a councillor to King Henry VIII of England, Speaker of the House of Commons and Lord High Chancellor of England. He opposed the King's separation from the Catholic Church and refused to acknowledge Henry as Supreme Head of The Church of England and the annulment of his marriage to Katherine of Aragon. After refusing to take the Oath of Supremacy, he was convicted of treason and beheaded. #sirthomasmore
