Shakespeare

The oldest item in our Shakespeare exhibition is this copy of 'Holinshed’s Chronicles' published in 1577. Did you know that Shakespeare used Holinshed as a source for many of his plays, including Macbeth, Richard III and King Lear?

In Holinshed’s account, an early king named Leir gave land to two of daughters and was eventually rejected by them. In contrast to Shakespeare’s King Lear, Holinshed recorded Leir’s restoration to the throne until his natural death when the crown passed to his daughter Cordeilla. http://bit.ly/2aLUJW1
