Batukeshwar Dutt

The Revolutionary whom India forgot and who spent his life in illness and penury:
Batukeshwar Dutt. 18 November 1910 to 20 July 1965.   and Bhagat Singh threw a bomb each in the Central Legislative Assembly on 8th April 1929 in order to protest against the Trade Disputes and Public Safety Bill that was about to be passed.
In the trial that followed Batukeshwar Dutt was sentenced to Kalapani. Life imprisonment at the Cellular Jail at Port Blair, Andaman Islands. In the years that followed he was lost to public memory.
After release from Kalapani, he participated in the Quit India movement. By now Batukeshwar Dutt had contracted TB. He was arrested and imprisoned at Motihari jail for four years. After his release he married Anjali in 1947. He tried his hand at running a transport business but did not succeed. The tuberculosis only got worse over time. A large amount of money went into finding a cure or at least a palliative. An impoverished Batukeshwar Dutt spent his final days at the AIIMS in New Delhi. Here he died, unsung, unnoticed, on 20th July 1965.
