Following the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, Sri Guruji was arrested on February 1, 1948. On February 4, the Sangh was banned. Through various struggles and efforts, the conditional ban on the Sangh was lifted on July 12, 1949. It was established that there was no connection between Gandhiji's assassination and the Sangh. Sri Guruji was released from prison on July 13, 1949. Thereafter, for three or four consecutive months, it is rare in history to witness another event comparable to the massive, heartfelt welcome extended to him by millions of people across Bharat. Responding to the public reception given in Madurai in December 1949, he remarked: "The postbox receives letters. Sometimes even very important letters arrive. But there is nothing in them for the postbox to take pride in. It serves merely as a tool to deliver letters to the right places and the right people. I am depositing all the honors you have bestowed upon me with my devoted workers. I have only the opportunity to represent them." On another occasion, refuting the claim that the Sangh would suffer an immeasurable loss in his absence, he said: "No human being is indispensable. Humans may come and go. But society lives on forever. Whether I am there or not, the Sangh will continue to function and grow, thanks to its foundational necessity for the nation and its inherent strength."
