Valluvar might have embraced the sannyasa stage known as vanaprastha and worn the saffron robe. This is the truth. If you look through Dravidian-tinted glasses, everything will appear distorted. Thiruvalluvar mentions deities in his Kural verses. In his 25th Kural, he refers to Indra; in his 179th, 519th, 617th, 920th, and 936th Kurals, he speaks of Lakshmi; in the 610th Kural, he alludes to the Vamana avatar; in the 1062nd Kural, he mentions Brahma; and in the 269th, 326th, 265th, 1083rd, and 1085th Kurals, he refers to Yama; while in the 134th and 543rd Kurals, he speaks of the celestial beings, the conduct of ascetics, Vedic principles, and the virtue of not coveting another's wife.
The Christian missionary scholar Rev. G.U. Pope has analyzed and explained Thiruvalluvar as a Saivite. “Thiruvalluvar does not align with the atheistic doctrines adhered to by Jains and Buddhists. In this regard, G.U. Pope states that there is a profound difference between the tenets of the sectarian text Nalaadiyar and the philosophy of Thirukkural. Thus, the traditions, culture, and way of life of that era—this is Sanathana. Thiruvalluvar has taught it clearly without any dilution. That is why we celebrate him as one of the Nayanmars and as a divine poet. What other proof could there be? This is the way of life for Tamils living across the world. Just as our freedom fighters and martyrs, like Thiruvalluvar, bore sacred marks such as vibhuti, sacred ash, or kumkum on their foreheads, this is a historical fact. Sanathana and Thiruvalluvar—like the soul and body—are inseparable forces. Without knowing the life history of Thiruvalluvar, without understanding the true essence of Sanathana, mocking Thiruvalluvar or disrespecting Hindu religious symbols should be avoided. We must accept that Thiruvalluvar was indeed a proponent of Hinduism and honor him accordingly.
