Jane Austen’s House is the small 17th-century cottage in the village of Chawton, in Hampshire, England. The house was her home from 1809 to 1817 — the last eight years of her life — and it is where she wrote or revised what became her six celebrated novels. After her death and later changes (the cottage was divided, rented out, and went through periods of neglect), it was rescued mid-20th century. A benefactor purchased it and, in 1949, it opened as a museum to honor her memory. Today it is a Grade I listed building and one of the world’s most important literary and historical sites tied to her life and work. Visiting the house is like stepping back into early 19th-century domestic life — with a focus on preserving the world in which she lived and wrote.
