Veteran politician and DMK headquarters secretary for the media, K. S. Radhakrishnan recalls that right from the first meeting with Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, following the death of Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai, Karunanidhi raised the issue of autonomy of States and for Chief Ministers to be given the right to hoist the national flag.
Mr. Radhakrishnan said the issue of the right for CM’s to unfurl the flag was raised in passing by K. Hanumanthaiah, Congress leader and Chief Minister of Karnataka, during his tenure as a member of the Constituent Assembly.
“He (Karunanidhi) raised three key agendas with Indira Gandhi – State autonomy, a separate State flag for Tamil Nadu and the right for Chief Ministers to unfurl the national flag. Even district Collectors were unfurling the national flag on Independence Day but Chief Ministers did not have the right. This was raised by Kalaignar,” he said.
