Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the prime minister of India greeting Mir Osman Ali Khan, Asaf Jah VII, the ruler of the principality of Hyderabad after Indian forces had freed him from the clutches of Islamist militia called 'Razakars'. Osman Ali Khan was the richest man in India. He ruled over a population of some 16 million of which about 13 million were Hindus and the rest were Muslims. The area of his riyasat of Hyderabad was estimated to be about 214,187 km², about one third of the area of Pakistan today. Making an Islamist state in the heart of India would have been the greatest achievements of the pan-Islamists but for Major General J. N. Chaudhuri of the Indian Army who entered the territories from five different axes and eliminated the Islamists. Pandit Sundarlal Srivastava, the Congress leader who investigated the entire episode estimated that about 40,000 Islamists were killed in the operation. WC Smith, the Canadian priest turned historian turned diplomat put the estimate at about 200,000, most of them civilians who were killed by fellow civilians after the Indian Army had eliminated the armed Islamist militia.
