Dr. Zakir Hossain, the then President of India, paying tribute to Deendayal Upadhyaya on 11 February 1968 in New Delhi. Deendayal's body was found on a railway track, a day before at Mughal Sarai (now, Pt. Deendayal Upadhyaya) Railway Station. He was elected President of Bharatiya Jana Sangh a few weeks prior & only months before BJS had emerged as an important opposition party. In coalition with Ram Manohar Lohia led socialists, Jana Sangh had been in power after the 1967 elections in Bihar, U.P & other states while in M.P it emerged as a principal opposition group.
