Anyone familiar with colonial-era photographs of Calcutta might recall one with the Union Jack proudly fluttering from atop the General Post Office, seen here on the left in all its glory, during the heyday of the empire. Those days are gone, thankfully, but this is a city which continues to perennially negotiate between a nostalgic past and the charting of a new, brighter future. Speaking of the tussle between old and new, the hand-drawn rickshaw seen here making its way through Netaji Subhas Road is as emblematic an element of Calcutta as the Howrah Bridge or the Eden Gardens. Restricted to pockets of the metropolis and having long been at the receiving-end of humanitarian criticism, the ‘haate-taanaa’ rickshaw still manages to elicit something deeply resonant and personal - that distinct, swaying sound of the brass bell carried by the ‘rickshawallah’ to herald his approach or the common image of a row of such vehicles lined along a typical Kolkata alley on a hot afternoon for a much-needed break.
Calcutta and Kolkata frequently flow into each other, whether smoothly or otherwise.
