Up to the late 1960's there were only private buses operating in Thanjavur. The popular bus companies were 1. T.V.S, - T.V. Sundaram Iyengar Company head quartered in Pudukottai and Madurai under name and style of Southern Roadways. It had its stand at the present TARI automobiles next to Sacred Heart Convent on Trichy Road. 2.S.R.V.S.- Sri Rama Vilas Service, operating from Kumbakonam - A Simpson Group of concerns. 3. S.M.T. - Swami Motor Transports had their Head Office and a big workshop at Thanjavur at North Gate area on A.Y.A.Nadar Road. Its president was Mr.Rethinam Pillai (Father of Mr Antonyraj of Sharmila Motors) 4. Raman & Raman (of Kumbakonam). The site now occupied by the LIC next to Thanjavur Municipality was their workshop and shed. Later it was sold to LIC. 5.T.M.T.- Tanjore Motor Trades, had their head quarters at Kumbakonam. This company was founded by Arokiasamy Vandayar (Father of Mr A.Joephraj of Tanjore who owned Silver Arrow Bus Service). Mr Arokiasamy Vandayar was aloso the Chairman of SRVS for some time. 6.Dwaraka Transports- This company was owned by the promoters of Sangam Group of Hotels. The company's name was later changed to Chidambara Vilas and Krishna and they still continue to operate bus transports.
