There is no reason why a so-called intellectual journal like the EPW cannot mean, or should not be, different things to different people at different points in time.
அறிவுஜீவிகளின் பைபிள் என்று அழைக்கப்படும் Economic & Political Weekly ஐ தொடர்ந்து 1982 லிருந்து சந்தாதாரராகவும், வாசகராகவும் இருந்து வருகிறேன். இன்றைக்கு அதனுடைய ஆசிரியர் திரு. ராம் மனோகர் ரெட்டி இந்த இதழை தன்னுடைய சகாக்களோடு நடத்தி வருகின்றார். குறிப்பாக இந்த இதழ் கடந்த காலத்தில் மறைந்த கிருஷ்ணராஜு என்ற ஆளுமை இந்த இதழை பல சிரமங்களுக்கு மத்தியில் நடத்தினார். இந்த இதழ் வெளியாகி 50 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு மேல் கடந்துவிட்டன. 1949ல் துவக்கப்பட்டது.
சச்சின் சௌத்ரி இதன் நிறுவன ஆசிரியர் ஆவார். அதன்பின் 35 ஆண்டுகள் கிருஷ்ணராஜு ஆசிரியராக இந்த இதழை நடத்தி வந்தார். பல பொருளாதார சுமைகள் இருந்தாலும் இந்த இதழ் வெளிவந்துகொண்டிருப்பது ஒரு தவமாக சிலர் எடுத்துக்கொண்ட முயற்சிகள் ஆகும். அற்புதமான ஆய்வுக்கட்டுரைகள் வெறும் பொருளாதாரம் அரசியல் மட்டுமல்லாமல் மனித உரிமைகள், சமூகப் பிரச்சினைகள், அறிவியல் ஆய்வுகள் எனப் பல வகையான அழுத்தமான ஆழமான ஆய்வுப்பூர்வமான கட்டுரைகள் இந்த இதழில் வெளிவருகின்றன. இந்த இதழை சற்று கவனமாகப் படித்தால்தான் சொல்லப்பட்ட கருத்துக்களை உள்வாங்க முடியும். மேம்போக்காக மற்ற வார இதழைப் போல்இதில் உள்ள பத்திகளை படித்தால் எதுவும் புரிதல் இல்லாமல் போய்விடும்.
பம்பாயிலிருந்து வெளிவருகின்ற இப்பத்திரிகை EPW Research Foundation 1993ல் நிறுவப்பட்டு அதற்கு இயக்குனரும், குழு உறுப்பினர்களும் உள்ளனர். தற்போது ஜெ. டென்னிஸ் ராஜகுமார் இயக்குனராக இருக்கின்றார். இதில் வரும் ஆய்வுக் கட்டுரைகள் அனைத்தையும் இந்த குழுவும் ஆசிரியர் குழுவும் இணைந்து பரிசீலனை செய்து வெளியிடுகின்றது. இதில் ஒரு கட்டுரை வருவது என்பது சாதாரண விஷயம் அல்ல. இதில் ஒரு ஆங்கிலக் கட்டுரை வந்துவிட்டால் அந்த பத்தியாளருக்கு ஒரு பெரிய பெருமை.
இந்தியாவிலுள்ள அத்தனை அறிவுஜீவிகள் மட்டுமல்லாமல் விமர்சகர்கள், அரசியல் கட்சிகளின் கொள்கைகளை வகுப்பவர்கள், பேராசிரியர்கள் போன்ற அனைவரும் விரும்பிப் படிக்கின்ற வார இதழாகும்.
இந்த இதழ் முதலில் Economic Weekly என்று 1949ல் துவங்கப்பட்டு, 1966ல் Economic and Political Weekly என்று பெயர்மாற்றம் செய்யப்பட்டு 50 ஆண்டுகள் ஆகி இதன் பொன்விழா கொண்டாட்டம் துவங்கியுள்ளது. ஒரு பக்கம் நிதி பற்றாக்குறை, மற்றொரு பக்கம் வாரம் ஒரு முறை கனமான ஆய்வுகளோடு எளிமையான வண்ணமயமில்லாத தரமான கட்டமைப்போடு கொண்டுவரவேண்டிய கட்டாயம். இதற்கு மத்தியில் இந்த இதழை வெளிக்கொண்டுவரும் ஆசிரியர் குழுவுக்கும், நிர்வாகக் குழுவுக்கும் இந்தியர் அனைவரும் நன்றிக்கடன் பட்டவர்கள். 50 ஆண்டு நிறைவாகும் EPW இன்றும் 100 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு மேல் தன் பணியை சிறப்போடு ஆற்ற நாம் அனைவரின் வாழ்த்துக்களோடு, அந்த இதழ் வர முடிந்த அளவு அந்த இதழின் சந்தாதாரராக இணைவோம் என்று முடிவெடுப்போம்.

First published in 1949 as the Economic Weekly and since 1966 as the Economic and Political Weekly, EPW, as the journal is popularly known, occupies a special place in the intellectual history of independent India. For more than five decades EPW has remained a unique forum that week after week has brought together academics, researchers, policy makers, independent thinkers, members of non-governmental organisations and political activists for debates straddling economics, politics, sociology, culture, the environment and numerous other disciplines.
EPW is also unique because it is the one forum where there is an exchange of ideas across the social science disciplines - political scientists debate with economists, sociologists read what political scientists have to say, historians study what economists have to say and so on.
EPW, published by the Sameeksha Trust, a registered charitable trust, is the only social science journal of its kind in the world. Where other reputed journals publish either only comments on contemporary affairs or research papers, EPW is unique in that every week it publishes analysis of contemporary affairs side by side with academic papers in the social sciences. The only other similar publication which contains short comments and research output is Nature of the U.K., which covers the physical sciences.
EPW has been built over the decades with a shoe-string budget and has experienced considerable financial difficulties. It has grown to be what it is today because of the passion and selfless efforts of its staff, support from its contributors and goodwill from advertisers.
