A Bill proposing new laws against errant Indian #fishermen is to be tabled in Parliament today (12).
The proposed laws would also make it possible to sue owners of fishing boats illegally entering Sri Lankan waters.
Speaking in parliament yesterday (11), Fisheries minister Mahinda Amaraweera said that even though laws exist, Indian fishermen illegally fishing in Sri Lankan waters are only be sued in High Courts under charges of violating immigration / emigration laws under the advice of the Attorney General.
The minister added that the majority of such fishing boats are owned by those from the state of Tamil Nadu.
