சார்லஸ் டிக்கன்ஸ் -Pickwick Paper by Charles Dickens

சார்லஸ் டிக்கன்ஸ் புகழ்பெற்ற ஆங்கில படைப்பாளி. சார்லஸின்  “பிக்விக் பேப்பர்ஸ் ” என்ற படைப்பு உலகப்புகழ்பெற்றது.  சார்லஸின் தந்தையார் ஜான் டிக்கன்ஸ் குடும்பம் பெரியது. இங்கிலாந்தின் ப்ளூம்ஸ்பரி (Bloomsbury) கடற்படை அலுவலகத்தில் எழுத்தராக பணிபுரிந்தார் ஜான் டிக்கன்ஸ்.

நான்கு வயதிலேயே சார்லஸ் டிக்கன்ஸ் தன் தாயார் எலிசபெத் மூலம் எழுத்துக் கூட்டி வாசிக்கக் கற்றுக்கொண்டார். புத்தகங்களுடனே வளர்ந்த அவருக்கும் வாசிப்பும் எழுத்தும் சிறுவயதிலே அறிமுகமானது. 1800-களின் தொடக்கத்தில், ஹென்றி பீல்டிஸ் போன்றோர் எழுதிய நாவல்களைக்கூட சிறுவயதிலே வாசித்திருக்கிறார். அவரது வாசிப்பு வேகத்தை பாராட்டாதவர்களே இல்லை.

Perhaps even more than Dickens, the villain of the piece is shifty John Forster, Dickens’s friend, biographer and spin-doctor. “I want you to consider the two views of Dickens,” says Forster. “One view is – the great novelist, who produces the immortal work, Pickwick. Another view is – the man who works from a structure and suggestions provided by a caricaturist.”

This tale of 19th-century deceit is framed by the deliberations of two present-day archivists who, like Newsnight guests, ponder the various allusions, connections and digressions. There are a lot of those in the 800 pages.

London is captured in all its splendid and seamy forms. And we are shown Seymour’s artistic journey from rifling through old Hogarths and Gillrays in the print shops of Fleet Street to tramping the blood-soaked stalls of Smithfield Market.

Although there is a touch of hyperbole to the author’s claim that Pickwick was “the greatest literary phenomenon there has ever been” – more than Holmes, Bond or Potter? – the genesis of Dickens’s genius proves fascinating. And bibliophiles do love a literary conspiracy; as such this is a masterpiece of imagination supported by a mountain of research.

The main theme, the relationship between text and images, is as relevant now as 200 years ago. “Pictures do sell words,” Seymour says. “Yet people are either oblivious to the fact, or ashamed of it.” It could be a line from the boardroom minutes at Facebook or Apple.
