Sir Thomas More

The Book of Sir Thomas More is the only surviving literary manuscript to contain Shakespeare's handwriting. A play about Sir Thomas More, it was initially written by Anthony Munday around the year 1600. Shakespeare was brought in to revise the script with several other playwrights. His contribution to the play is a scene in which Thomas More prevents an unruly crowd from rioting against immigrants:

"What country, by the nature of your error,
Should give you harbour? Go you to France or Flanders,
To any German province, Spain or Portugal,
Nay, anywhere that not adheres to England,
Why, you must needs be strangers, would you be pleas’d
To find a nation of such barbarous temper"
