In this visualization, the 22 scheduled languages of India are shown by their geography and the name of the script they use.To give prominence to the major speaking languages, the Constitution has recognized some languages and included as official languages for administrative purposes of the respective States according to Articles 344(1) and 351 in the 8th Schedule. These languages are called Scheduled languages.
Initially, there were included 14 languages in the schedule and these languages got printed on the Indian Currency Notes also. Subsequently, Sindhi was added in 1967 by 21st constitutional amendment act; Konkani, Manipuri and Nepali were added in 1992 by 71st Constitutional Amendment Act; and Bodo, Dogri, Maithili and Santali were added in 2003 by 92nd Constitutional Amendment Act.

UPSC has made provision to write with these languages in its examinations. (But the question papers are set in English and Hindi only).
The written form of a language is called its script. Scripts have names. Hindi, for example, is written in the Devanagari script. English is written in Latin Script. The white dots on the maps are selected places where Sanskrit is spoken.
