#Bhoposeema- 1984
40years over…..
————————————-
Union Carbide Gas Disaster. On the night of 2nd and 3rd December 1984, the Union Carbide pesticide factory in Bhopal released toxic gases into the air. 500,000 people living in dense urban clusters in the neighbourhood were impacted. Some 2,259 died within seconds of inhaling the gas. The death toll rose to some 3,787 within a few days. Over the next few years the total number of people disabled, harmed severely rose to over 574,366. These were the official figures reported by the Government of Madhya Pradesh in 2008.
Part of the problem initially in treating victims was that the Union Carbide factory refused to tell anyone about the nature of the poison. Doctors working in the dark finally settled on the gas being Methyl IsoCyanate and proceeded to treat patients for cyanide poisoning.
Later it turned out that the Union Carbide factory did not bother to inform the city neighbourhood about the leakage. Many years ago, Union Carbide had actually disconnected the sirens that had been installed to warn the city.
For over one hour some 42 tons of gas leaked out. Plant employees vacated the plant and went upwind. The poisonous gas was allowed to drift downwind into the city for over an hour before the first casualties were reported. In the next three hours the poisonous gas cloud covered the entire old city before being dispersed by the sun and wind.Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer called as Bhoposeema.
