Waren Hastings

Waren Hastings, the Governor of Bengal, was appointed as the first Governor General of India when the Regulating Act came into force. Many members of the Council that was to govern Bengal along with him got into conflicts with him -- some over policy matters, some over women. After the end of his term in India he was sought to be impeached by the British Parliament. Mismanagement of Company Affairs and Corruption. This was essentially the charge against Hastings. Edmund Burke, the MP from Ireland, a leading liberal, was the most vocal in charging Hastings with wrong doing. Burke's speech, four days long, in the Hall of Westminster, listed out the charges against Hastings. It began on 13 Feb 1788.
