Parties, National Parties and symbols.
In 1951-52when the first General Elections were held in India, there were 26 recognised 'parties' of which 14 were 'national parties'. These parties were allotted symbols to enable the largely illiterate population of India to discriminate between names printed on the ballot paper.
The creation of symbols took a lot of care and expertise. Election Commission took care to create symbols that were not confusing. They had to be easily distinguishable. The symbol needed to be scalable-- something that looked distinct whether drawn on a 1" by 1" square as also on a large poster.
