Ahead of the Coronation today 6-5-2023, here sharing archive photos of Their Majesties The Royal Family at State Openings of Parliament, the ceremony to mark the start of the parliamentary year
State Opening is the only regular time the three parts of UK Parliament – the Sovereign, House of Lords and UK House of Commons – regularly meet.
In these photos:
The King first attended a #StateOpening in 1970 as Prince of Wales.
After a break of several years, the Prince of Wales began regularly attending State Opening in 2013, accompanied by the then Duchess of Cornwall for the first time.
In 2022, the Prince of Wales and then Duke of Cambridge opened Parliament on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II, acting as Counsellors of State.

In 1953, Queen Elizabeth II travelled in the Gold State Coach to and from her #Coronation service in Westminster Abbey. Here we can see the energy and enthusiasm of the enormous crowds gathered along the route.
