எதேச்சையாக இன்று என்கண்ணில் தட்டுப்பட்டது ஒரு கட்டுரை. அது இன்றைய ஒன்றிய அரசின் நிதியமைச்சர் நிர்மலா சீதாராமன் எழுதி பயோனியர் பத்திரிக்கையில் 2012-ஆம் ஆண்டு மே 14 அன்று வெளியான கட்டுரை.  அழகாகவும் அருமையாகவும் எழுதப்பட்டிருந்த அந்தக் கட்டுரையை மறுவாசிப்பு செய்தேன். 

அமைச்சர் நிர்மலா சீதாராமன் மகள் திருமணம் வேறு பெங்களூரில் நேற்று

(ஜூன் 7) எளிமையான முறையில் நடந்ததுள்ளது.கர்நாடகாவில் இருந்து ராஜ்யசபாஎம்.பி.,யாகதேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளார். இவர் பெங்களூரு ஜெயநகரில் தன் குடும்பத்தினருடன் வசித்து வருகிறார்.

யாருடைய ஆருடத்திற்கும் மாறுபடக் கூடியதல்ல அரசியல்; வெவ்வேறு காலங்களில் வெவ்வேறான அரசியல்வாதிகள் நடந்துவந்த, நடந்துவரும் பாதைகள் பற்பல. இப்படியெல்லாம் சிந்தனைகள் என்மனதில் அலையடித்தன. ஞாபகவீதியில் உலாவந்தன நடந்த நாடகங்களும் அவற்றில் மறைந்திருந்த பூடகங்களும்.

திமுக-மதிமுக கூட்டணி

ஆண்டு 2001. அப்போது கலைஞர் தலைமையிலான திமுகவும், வைகோ தலைமையிலான மதிமுகவும் சட்டசபைத் தேர்தலைக் கைகோர்த்து எதிர்கொள்ள கூட்டணி அமைத்தன. வைகோவின் செல்வாக்கிற்காக அவரது கட்சிக்கு 21 தொகுதிகள் ஒதுக்கப்பட்டன. தனது சொந்த  சங்கரன்கோவில் தொகுதியைக் கேட்டார் வைகோ. ஆனால் அவரது கோரிக்கை நிறைவேற்றப்படவில்லை; சங்கரன்கோவிலுக்குப் பதிலாக வாசுதேவநல்லூரைத் தரமுன்வந்தார்   கலைஞர். அதைப் போல வைகோ கேட்டிருந்த சேரமாதேவிக்கும், சங்ககிரிக்கும் பதிலாக வேறிரண்டு தொகுதிகளைத் தந்தார் கருணாநிதி. ஆனால் தொகுதி உடன்பாடுப் பேரம் முடிவதற்குள் கூட்டணி சம்பந்தமாக வைகோவின் மனநிலை மாறிவிட்டதால் அவர் வேறொரு முடிவு எடுத்து விட்டார். கூட்டணி முறிந்ததால்  கலைஞரின் கொடும்பாவிகளை மதிமுகவினர் எரித்தனர்.

இதற்கிடையில் திமுகவின் ஒற்றன் என்று நான் முத்திரை குத்தப்பட்டேன்.  

அரசியல் சவால்களும் சங்கடங்களும் சோர்வு -ரணம் நிறைந்த அந்தக் காலகட்டத்தில் கலைஞர் அழைப்பின்பேரில் நான் திமுகவில் இணைந்துகொள்ள முடிவு செய்தேன். சந்தர்ப்பவாத அரசியல்வாதி என்னும் குற்றச்சாட்டுக்கு அஞ்சிய நான் ஆரம்பத்தில் சற்றுத் தயங்கினேன். எனினும் தீரயோசித்து திமுகவில் நான் இணைந்தேன். பாடுபட்டு உழைத்து மெல்ல மெல்ல உயர்ந்து கட்சியின் முதல்நிலை செய்தித் தொடர்பாளராக நான் நியமிக்கப் பட்டேன். 

அரசியல் கட்சிகளின் செய்தித் தொடர்பாளராக தமிழ்நாட்டில் முதன்முதலில் நான்தான் நியமிக்கப்பட்டேன். முன்பு மதிமுகவில், பின்பு திமுகவில்.

உரசல், விரிசல் வெளியேற்றம்

அன்றைய காலகட்டத்தில் அரசியல் நதியின் போக்கு ஒரே சீராக இல்லை. மாற்றங்களும், ஏமாற்றங்களும், தடுமாற்றங்களும் மாறிமாறி நிகழ்ந்தன. பொடா சட்டத்தின்படி வைகோ கைது செய்யப் பட்டார்.  அரசியலில் நிரந்த நண்பர்களும் இல்லை; நிரந்தர பகைவர்களும் இல்லை என்னும் மாக்கியவெல்லி தத்துவத்தை மீண்டுமொரு முறை நிரூபிப்பது போல, தன்னால் வெளியேற்றப்பட்ட வைகோவை சிரமம் பார்க்காமல் சிறைக்குச் சென்று பார்த்தார் கலைஞர். அது எனக்குள் ஆதங்கத்தை உருவாக்கியதாலும், ஏற்கனவே கட்சிக்குள் பகைசசூழல் நிலவியதாலும், இறுதியில் திமுகவை விட்டு வெளியேறுவதென நான் முடிவெடுத்தேன். ஆண்டு 2004-ல் என் தீர்மானத்தை நடைமுறைப்படுத்தினேன்.

பாஜகவுடன் அகஸ்மாத்தான தொடர்பு

அதன்பின்பு வெங்கையா நாயுடு, ஜனா கிருஷ்ணமூர்த்தி போன்ற பாஜக தலைவர்களுடன் எனக்குத் தொடர்பு ஏறபட அவர்கள் தேசிய கட்சியில் சேருமாறு அழைப்பு விடுத்தனர். 

அன்றைய பிரதமர் காலஞ்சென்ற இந்திராகாந்தி கச்சத்தீவை இலங்கைக்குத் தாரைவார்த்துக் கொடுத்தபோது, மதுரையைச் சார்ந்த வழக்கறிஞர் ஜனா கிருஷ்ணமூர்த்தி அதை எதிர்த்து சென்னை உயர் நீதிமன்றத்தில் வழக்குத் தொடுத்தார். அப்போது அவருக்குத் தேவையான ஆவணங்களை நான் சேகரித்துத் தந்தேன். அப்போதிருந்து அவருடன் எனக்குப் பழக்கமுண்டு. 

தேசிய நதிகளை இணைக்கும் உச்ச நீதிமன்ற வழக்கு விசயம் சம்பந்தமாக நான் டில்லி சென்றபோது, பாஜக அலுவலகத்திற்கு அழைக்கப்பட்டேன். அங்கே விஜயகுமார் மல்ஹோத்ரா, மதன்லால் குரானா, சுஷ்மா சுவராஜ், சாஹிப் சிங் வர்மா, அருண் ஜெட்லி, ஜனா கிருஷ்ணமூர்த்தி உட்பட பல்வேறு பாஜக தலைவர்களைச் சந்திக்கும் வாய்ப்புக் கிட்டியது. அப்போது ஜேஎன்யூ முன்னாள் மாணவியான நிர்மலா சீதாராமன் அங்கு இருந்ததை பார்த்தேன். சந்தித்தேன். ஆற்றலும் நம்பிக்கையும் கொண்டிருந்த அவர் அப்போது பாஜகவில் இணையப் போவதாகப் பேசிக் கொண்டார்கள். அதைப்போல நானும் கட்சியில் இணைய வேண்டும் என்று தலைவர்கள் விரும்பினர். 

பாஜகவில் நான் இணைய வேண்டும் என்ற அந்த அழைப்புக் கவர்ச்சிகரமாக இருந்தது. எனினும் மனஅமைதியைப் பெறும் பொருட்டு, ஆர்ப்பாட்டமும் ஆரவாரமும் பொங்கித் ததும்பிய அரசியலில் ஓய்வெடுக்க நான் 2003-ல் முடிவெடுத்தேன். 

ஆனால் அரசியலில் அணிவகுத்துச் செல்லும் பல்வேறு மனிதர்களின் வாழ்க்கையினை, உமர்கய்யாம் வார்த்தைகளில் சொல்வதென்றால், ”எழுதி எழுதி மேற்செல்லும் விதியின் கைகள்” வெவ்வேறு விதங்களில்தான் எழுதிக் கொண்டிருக்கின்றன. 

எதிர்பார்த்தபடி 2006-ல் பாஜகவில் இணைந்த நிர்மலா சீதாராமன் நீண்டதொரு அரசியல் பயணத்தில் நீக்கமற ஈடுபட்டு நினைத்துக்கூடப் பார்க்க முடியாத உயரத்தைத் தொட்டுவிட்டார். இவர், நான் சில நாட்கள் 1970 களில் சென்னை சட்டக்கல்லூரி சேரும் முன் டில்லி ஜேன்யூவில் படித்த வாளாகத்தின் முன்னாள் மாணவி(1980களில்)

அர்ப்பணிப்புணர்வும், அழகாக உரைநிகழ்த்தும் ஆற்றலும், அரசியல் பயிற்சியும், முயற்சியும் அவரை உச்சத்திற்குக் கொண்டு சென்றன. கட்சியில் பல்வேறு தளங்களில் பணிபுரிந்த அவர் 2010-ல் கட்சியின் செய்தித் தொடர்பாளர் ஆனார். பின்பு தேசிய மகளிர் ஆணையத்தின் தலைவராகி பெண்களின் பிரச்சினைகளுக்குக் குரல்கொடுத்தார். மெல்ல மெல்ல வெல்லும் திறனோடு மேன்மேலும் உயர்ந்த நிர்மலா சீதாராமன் நிதியமைச்சராக இன்று நிலைத்துவிட்டார்; அகிலம் பேசும் தலைவர்களில் ஒருவராய்த் திகழும் அவரது உலகப்புகழுக்குக் காரணங்கள் அவரிடமிருக்கும் அழுத்தமான தலைமைப்பண்பும், அரசியல் உபாயத்திறன்களும், பொதுவாழ்க்கைக்கு தன்னை அர்ப்பணித்துக் கொண்ட அவரது சேவை மனப்பான்மையும்தான். 

மாச்சரியங்கள் மட்டும் அல்ல ஆச்சரியங்களும் நிரம்பிய போர்க்களம் அரசியல். சாதாரணங்கள் அசாதாரணங்களாகி விடுகின்றன; சராசரிகள் பெருவாரியான வெற்றிகளைப் பெற்றுவிடுகின்றன. 

இதற்குச் சரியான உதாரணம் முன்னாள் பிரதமர் பி.வி. நரசிம்மராவின் அரசியல் பயணம்.  அவர் பிரதமரான போது அதுவரை எகிறியிருந்த எதிர்பார்ப்புகள் தகர்ந்தன; ஏமாற்றம் மிஞ்சியது; பலகோடி விழிகள் விரிந்தன; படர்ந்தன ஆச்சரியங்கள். 

இந்திரா காந்தியின் துர்மரணத்திற்குப் பின்பு அவரது புதல்வர் ராஜீவ் காந்தி பிரதமராக ஆட்சிப் பொறுப்பை ஏற்றுக்கொண்ட பின்னர் காங்கிரஸ் மூத்த தலைவர்களில் ஒருவரான ராவ் அவரது பூர்விக மாநிலமான ஆந்திராவிற்குத் திரும்பிச் சென்று தனது இலக்கியப் பணியைத் தொடர்வார் என்று எதிர்பார்க்கப்பட்டது. ஆனால் அவர் தமிழ்நாட்டில் குற்றாலத்தில் ஐந்தருவி சாலையிலிருக்கும் மெளனசாமி மடத்தில் போய்ச்சேர்ந்து விடுவதென முடிவெடுத்தார். ஆனால் விதி யாரை விட்டது?

ராஜீவ் காந்தி 1991, மே 21 அன்று படுகொலை செய்யப்பட்ட பின்பு, காங்கிரஸ் கட்சி தத்தளித்தது. இந்தப் பரபரப்பான அரசியல் சூழலில், கற்பனைக் கதைகளில் யானை மாலையிட்டு புதிய அரசனைத் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கும் நிகழ்வைப் போன்று, அமைதிக்குணமும், ஆழ்ந்த அறிவுநுட்பமும் நுண்மாண் நுழைபுலமும் கொண்ட  நரசிம்மராவ் தோள்களில் மீது பிரதமர் மாலையை காலம் அணிவித்தது.

இந்தக் கதைகள் எல்லாம் அரசியல் சூதாட்டத்தில் யார் வெற்றி பெறுவார், யார் தோற்பார் என்று ஆருடங்களால் கணிக்க முடியாது என்பதை, எல்லாம் மாறும் என்ற மாறாத தத்துவத்தை வலியுறுத்திச் சொல்கின்றன.  

அரசியலுக்கு ஒற்றைமுகம் அல்ல; பலமுகங்கள் உண்டு. 

#வில்லியம்_சேக்ஸ்பியரின்_ஹாம்லெட் தன் காதலி ஒஃபீலியாவிடம் சொன்னது போல, “கடவுள் கொடுத்தது ஒரு முகம்தான்.” ‘ஆனால் அரசியல் பலமுகங்களை அணிந்து கொள்கிறது. அணிய வைக்கிறது.

உனக்குத் தெரியாத ஒருவர் கூட நீ வெற்றி பெற வேண்டும் என நினைப்பார். ஆனால் உனக்கு நெருக்கமான ஒருவன்தான் உன் தோல்வியை எதிர்பார்த்து காத்திருப்பான்’.

இவை என்னுடைய 52-ஆண்டு அரசியல் வாழ்க்கை எனக்குக் கற்றுக் கொடுத்த பால பாடம்.

While searching for something unrelated, I stumbled upon an article written by Nirmala Sitharaman in Pioneer dated May 14, 2012. The moment of serendipity set memories flooding back to my mind. The article bears testament to her articulation and eloquence that caught my attention. It triggered a reflection on the unpredictable nature of politics and the various terrains that different individuals keep treading in the political world. Also yesterday her only daughter’s wedding simply held in Bangalore. She never bothered about her publicity 

Now I come to my point;The DMK-MDMK Alliance-In 2001, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) formed an alliance for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The alliance saw allocation of 21 seats for the MDMK, with the party led by Vaiko playing a significant role. However, Vaiko’s demand for allocation of the Sankarankovil assembly constituency was not conceded and instead, he was offered Vasudevanallur.  Sankarankovil  allotted to Dr Krishna Amy’s PT as per promise given to him as early. Similarly, instead of Cheranmadevi in Tirunelveli district and Sangakiri in Salem district which he had demanded, he was offered alternative constituencies. But Vaiko, who had a change of heart by that time for reasons known to him alone, chose to opt out of the alliance. Over the break-up of the alliance, Vaiko’s partymen burnt the effigies of the DMK patriarch Kalignar.

The DMK-MDMK alliance ultimately fell apart- Vaiko’s personal  interest , leaving me caught in the political crossfire. I was branded as a DMK spy and was facing the music.   As a spokesman of a political party, I was the first to hold such a post – first in kind  in Tamilnadu,the MDMK and later in the DMKJoining DMK and Political Prominence

Despite the political challenges that stared in the face of mine, I decided to join the DMK, responding to an invitation from Karunanidhi himself. While offered the Kovilpatti Assembly constituency, I initially refused, fearing allegations of opportunism. However, after some consideration, I joined the DMK and quickly rose to prominence, becoming the party's first spokesperson.

Friction with DMK and Exit

However, the Tamil Nadu political affairs continued to be in a state of flux.

Vaiko's arrest under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) led to Kalignar Karunanidhi's jail visit, further straining my relationship with the DMK. Eventually, squaring off with the party leadership and caught in a hostile environment, I made the hard decision to leave the DMK in 2004.

A Chance Encounter with BJP

Thereafter I was in touch with the prominent BJP leaders such as and Venkaiah Naidu and Jana Krishnamurthy who wanted me to join the BJP. 

When Indira Gandhi had ceded Katcha Theevu to Sri Lanka, Jana Krishnamurthy, who advocate hailed from Madurai, filed a petition in the Madras High Court against the Congress-led union government and I provided him with relevant papers in 1974.  I had since been acquainted with him. 

When I went to Delhi for my case on the file of Supreme Court, pertaining to the linking of the national rivers, I was invited to the BJP office, where I had the opportunity to meet with several influential leaders including Vijay Kumar Malhotra,  Madan Lal Khurana, Sushma Swaraj, Sahib Singh Verma, Arun Jaitley, Jana Krishnamurthy and so on. Among them, I found Nirmala Sitharaman, a promising new entrant into the party., Seetharaman, a former student of JNU,  (Am also was there as student before my admission in Madras Law college during 1970s)was about to join the BJP and the leaders expressed their desire that I follow suit.

Despite the luring offer to join the BJP, I was in dire need of peace of mind back in 2003 and hence decided to keep off the active politics and liked tranquility stage.

Destiny had different plans for different people pursuing politics.  

Nirmala Sitharaman, as expected, threw in her lot with the BJP in 2006, a watershed year in her political career. She was set upon a remarkable hard work, good performance, and success journey that would lead her to prominent positions down the line and earn her a global recognition.  

Her commitment, dedication, and impressive oratorical skills propelled her through the ranks of the BJP and she quickly rose to become the party's spokesperson in 2010. Her effective and eloquent communication skill added up to her profile. Subsequently, she secured the prestigious position of Chairperson of the National Commission for Women, which gave her a leeway to stand up, advocating  women's rights and social issues. She kept on ratcheting up her glittering trajectory and ultimately became Finance Minister in the union government.  Her impactful leadership, strategic acumen, and dedication to public service have elevated her to the position she’s now in, showering her with global glory, name and fame. 

In the realm of politics, surprises can come from the most unexpected quarters. One such example is the political journey of P. V. Narasimha Rao, who defied all expectations and assumptions and raising several eyebrows, became the Prime Minister of the country. 

When Rajiv Gandhi donned the mantle of Prime Minister, many expected Narasimha Rao to retire to Andhra Pradesh and indulge in literary pursuits. Finally he decided to settle in Mounasamy mutt at Courtallam (Five Falls Road) in Tamil Nadu.  However, destiny had thought otherwise. 

Following the tragic assassination of Rajiv Gandhi on May 21, 1991, the Indian National Congress found itself in a shambles.  In this tumultuous period, Narasimha Rao emerged as a consensus candidate in the party. With his quiet demeanor and sharp political acumen, Rao was elected as Prime Minister of India.

These stories from the lives of Nirmala Sitharaman and Narasimha Rao exemplify the dynamic nature of political alliances, importance of personal choices and unpredictable nature of political career. 

Politics is a realm where even the most unlikely individuals can scale greater heights, underscoring the adage that anything happens in politics. 

Politics is, after all, just a matter of luck.  The words; #shakespeare’s #Hamlet told Ophelia, “God has given you one face and you make another yourself,” hold good for politicians too. Besides, it’s an in-thing in politics that even a person unknown to you may wish you all success whereas one close to you may be waiting to see you buffeted by failure. 

These are the unforgettable basic and fundamental lessons that my 52-year political life has taught me!
