22 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு, 2001-ம் ஆண்டு ஜூன் 30-ம் தேதி விடிந்தும் விடியாத அதிகாலை திமுக தலைவரும், தமிழக முன்னாள் முதல்வருமான கலைஞர், மேம்பாலம் கட்டும் ஊழல் வழக்கில் கைது செய்யப்பட்டார். அவரது ஆலிவர் ரோடு வீட்டிற்குள் போலீசார் நுழைந்து, அவரை தாக்கிய விதம், ஜெயலலிதா தலைமையிலான அப்போதைய அதிமுக அரசின் அராஜகத்தைப் பறை சாற்றின.

இந்த கொடூரக் காட்சியின் ஒரு பகுதியாக நானிருந்து சம்பவத்தைப் பார்த்திருக்கிறேன். 

நள்ளிரவில் கலைஞரின் மருமகனும், அப்போதைய மத்திய அமைச்சருமான முரசொலி மாறன்  போலீசாருடன் மோதினர். வாக்குவாதத்தில் ஈடுபட்டனர்.

முரசொலி மாறன் போலீஸ் அதிகாரி முகமது அலியிடம் வாக்குவாதம் செய்து கொண்டிருக்கும்போதே உதவி கமிஷனர் முருகேசன் கலைஞரை பின்புறம் இரண்டு கைகளுக்கிடையே தனது கைகளைக் கொடுத்து தூக்கி, தரதரவென படிக்கட்டில் தூக்கிச் சென்று காரில் ஏற்றினார். பிறகு சிபிசிஐடி அலுவலகத்திற்கு அவரை அழைத்துச் செல்லப்பட்டார்.

முரசொலி மாறனின் அறிவுறுத்தலின் பேரில், அந்த காட்சியின் வீடியோ காட்சிகளை  எடுத்துக்கொண்டு, உடனடியாக சன் டிவி அலுவலகம் வரை சென்றேன். சன் டிவி அலுவலகம்  அமைந்த  அறிவாலயம்  பின்புறம் உள்ள காம்பவுண்ட் சுவரில் ஏறி அலுவலகத்திற்குள் ஓடிவந்து, அந்த வீடியோவைப் பொறுப்பாளர்களிடம்  கொடுத்தேன்.   இந்தச் சம்பவத்தை தமிழக மக்கள் தெரிந்து கொள்ளும் வகையில் வீடியோவை  அதிகாலையில் ஒளிபரப்பும்படி நான் அவர்களிடம் சொன்னேன். 

லுங்கி மற்றும் கிழிந்த சட்டை அணிந்து கொண்டு மத்திய சிறை முன்பு கருணாநிதி அமர்ந்திருந்தது  மக்களிடையே ஓர் ரணஅலையை ஏற்படுத்தியது.

இதனிடையே, முன்னெச்சரிக்கை நடவடிக்கையாக மாநிலம் முழுவதும் 50,000 திமுகவினர் கைது செய்யப்பட்டனர். தற்போதைய முதல்வர் ஸ்டாலின், மதுரை சிறையில்  அடைக்கப்பட்டார்

பொதுமக்கள், அரசியல் தலைவர்கள், வாஜ்பாய் தலைமையிலான தேசிய ஜனநாயகக் கூட்டணி மத்திய அரசு என்று எல்லாத் தரப்பினரும் இந்த கைது நடவடிக்கையைக் கண்டித்தனர்.

மாநிலம் முழுவதும் திமுகவினர் கைது செய்யப்பட்டதை எதிர்த்து மனித உரிமை ஆணையத்தை அணுகினேன்.  

இந்தச் சம்பவத்தால் தமிழகம் முழுவதும் திமுகவினர்கைது செய்யப்பட்டனர். திமுக தலைவர் கைது செய்யப்பட்டது  அடுத்து  உடனே நான் 1-7-2001  அன்று  தாக்கல் செய்த மனுவை மாநில மனித உரிமை ஆணையம் உடனடியாகக் விசாரிச்சுது. நான ஆஜர் ஆகி வழக்கை நடத்தினேன்.

நீதிபதி சாமிதுரை கலைஞர் கைது குறித்து விசாரித்து , பல மத்திய சிறைகளில்  அடைக்கப்பட்ட திமுகவினர்  50,000 உடனே விடுதலை செய்ய. உத்தரவும்இட்டார். எனது முயற்சியாலும், உத்தரவாலும் அவர்கள் அனைவரும் விடுவிக்கப்பட்டனர்.

இன்று அந்த சம்பவத்தை வேதனையுடன் நினைவு கூர்கிறேன்.  கலைஞரின் ஆதரவாளருமான நான் கைது சம்பவத்தின் போது என்னால் முடிந்த அனைத்தையும் கட்சிக்கு ஆதரவாகச் செய்தேன். 

ஆனால் நான் துரோகியாக, திமிர்ப் பிடித்தவனாக, கலகக்காரனாக  முத்திரை குத்தப்பட்டேன்.  அப்பட்டமான உண்மையைச் சொல்பவன் நான் ஓரங்கட்டப்பட்டதில் ஆச்சரியமில்லை. 

இதுதான் இன்றைய அரசியல்…. நேர்மைக்கும், அர்ப்பணிப்புணர்வுக்கும், விடாமுயற்சிகும் கிடைக்கும் பரிசு! ஏனோ தெரியவில்லை இப்போதெல்லாம், “அரசியலில் அறம்சார்ந்த விழுமியங்களுக்கு இடமில்லை,” என்ற மாக்கியவெல்லியின் வார்த்தைகளே வரிசைகட்டி மனதில் ஊர்வலம் போகின்றன.

ஜெயல்லிதா குருவாய்யூரில் யானை பரிசளித்து கொண்டு இருந்தார். இதுதான  உலகம்.

Kalignar’s(MK’s )arrest episode: 22 years on…. 

Twentytwo years ago, in the early hours on June 30, 2001, DMK patriarch and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Kalignar was arrested in the flyover construction corruption case foisted on him. The way police broke into his Gopalapuram house and manhandled the octogenarian, making him cry in pain reflected badly on the then AIADMK government helmed by Jayalalithaa.

I witnessed this episode, part of the ghastly scene. In the dead of the night, Kalaignar’s newphew and then union minister Murasoli Maran.

On Maran’s instructions, I swung into action, grabbing the video footage of the scene and instantly going all the way to the SUN TV office. I virtually climbed up the compound wall of the Sun TV office’s backyard and ran into the office, giving the video to the crew in charge.   I ordered them to waste no time telecasting the video so that the Tamil Nadu people got to know the incident in the wink of an eye.  The telecast happened by way of a reward for my painstaking effort. 

There was a backlash consequently with the scene of  Kalignar wearing a lungi and torn shirt sitting in front of the Central Jail arousing a wave of sympathy among the people.

Meanwhile, the DMK party 50,000 workers all over the state were taken into custody as a preventive measure to stall the issue escalate into a major law and order problem. Stalin, at present Chief Minister was taken to Madura Central jail  anticipating a government crackdown on him. 

The public, the politicians across the spectrum and even the NDA union government led by Vajpayee  could not savor the arrest episode. 

I approached the Human Rights Commission, bringing the issue of arrest of DMK activists across the state.  With my efforts and the rights panel’s order, they were all released. 

Today I recall the incident with pain nagging my heart.  I, a dedicated DMK worker and acolyte of  Kalignar , did all my best in the arrest episode. 

But I used to be branded as a traitor, as an arrogant man, as a rebel, as a stormy petrel and et al.  As I always call a spade a spade and definitely by no other name and am a blunt truth-teller, there were occasions when I had to tread on the toes of the party high command and fellow partymen.  So, no wonder, in course of time, I fell by the wayside among the party ranks. 

This is what honesty, dedication and perseverance lead to.

Nowadays Machiavelli’s dictum, “Politics has nothing to do with morals,” keeps on coming back to mind.
