Vote for Sikandar Bakht, says the poster in 1977 as people prepare to oust Indira Gandhi fro power. Sikandar Bakht who began his career in the Congress, opposed Indira Gandhi from the beginning. He was with Congress- 0 whose leaders were Nijlingappa, Moraji Desai and Kamraj, after the split with Mrs Indira Gandhi.
He was jailed during the Emergency. In the elections that followed he was elected an MP. When the Janata Party broke up he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. When the BJP formed a government, he was appointed External affairs Minister. That tenure was brief since the government fell within a fortnight. Later, when the BJP once again formed a government he held important ministerial responsibilities. In 2002, after completing his ministerial stint, he was appointed the Governor of Kerala. Here he passed away two years later because of ill health. Twice I met him regarding
Sri Lanka Tamils ethnic issue.
