Historiography - Mohan Guruswamy

காட்பாடியில் பாலாற்றின் கரையில் அமைந்துள்ள கல்லறையில் முனுசாமி முதலியார் குறித்தான கல்வெட்டுக் குறிப்பை திரு மோகன் குருசாமி அவர்கள் நேற்றைக்குத் தன்னுடைய முகநூலில் பதிவு செய்திருந்தார்.

அக்காலத்தில் நிலவிய குடும்ப பாரம்பரியங்களை இன்றைக்கு எளிதாக அறிந்துகொள்ளக்கூடிய வகையில் இந்த கல்வெட்டுகள் உள்ளன என்று அந்தப்பதிவில் தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.

பதிவுகள் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டால் தான் எதிர்காலத்தில் நமது வரலாற்றைத் துள்ளியமாகத் தெரிந்துகொள்ளமுடியும். நம்மிட தெளிவான துல்லியமான வரலாறு இல்லை என்பது ஒரு குறைபாடு. இதை நிவர்த்தி செய்யவேண்டியது இன்றைய சமுதாயத்தின் பொறுப்பு. ஆனால் நாம் அவற்றைக் கண்டுகொள்ளாமல் இருக்கின்றோம்.

அந்தப்பதிவு.

Yesterday before I left Vellore, I visited the cemetery at Katpadi on banks of the Palar river to offer a remembrance to my ancestor, Munnuswamy Mudaliar who is interred there. He was my maternal great great great grandfather and was the person who laid the foundations to the family wealth. He died on March 10, 1898 and was over seventy years old then. He was buried as he was a Vaishnavaite Mudaliar and also had a tattoo of Vishnu on his person. His son Ramaswamy Mudaliar and grandson Ramakrishna Mudaliar were also interred alongside. 

My grandmother married, my grandfather VM Ramaswamy Mudaliar, about whom I made a reference here a few days ago, was a Shaivaite and the line changed course ever since. The Shaivaite Mudaliar practice is to cremate.

The graves are tended by a man called Wilson who lives next door. He read out the headstone and said it had the word "karar" to signify his integrity and fairness. I was told by my uncle Dr.Ramakrishnan (mothers youngest brother) who lives on Philadelphia that it was how the family was known and that the two other headstones also mentioned it. Indeed they did. 

He however didn't think it funny when I told him that "karar" seemed to have been interred along with them. And now have become quite "be karar" as we don't even use the Mudaliar surname any more. 

But it was a valuable moment for me as I contemplated and tried to imagine the man, some of whose DNA courses in my body and mind and hence lives through me.
