THE WORLD’S 15 MOST UNFRIENDLY CITIES: SURVEY

A SURVEY by Travel + Leisure, has concluded that Moscow is the unfriendliest city in the world.
The magazine asked around 200,000 of its readers to rank 266 cities on various aspects, one of which was their warmth towards visitors. This survey by has uncovered what it claims to be the 15 least friendly cities in the world, and six US destinations have made the top ten.

15. Boston, US
The green and pleasant New England city makes a surprise entry at 15. If the attitude of locals leaves something to be desired, British travellers can at least find comfort in the city’s seasons. “Fall brings warm days, chilly nights and flamboyant foliage,” said our expert, Kathy Arnold, “winters are cold, but clear; spring brings a riot of colour to parks and gardens; and summer is hot and often humid.”
14. Frankfurt, Germany
While Frankfurt residents are also labelled unfriendly, the German city received a more positive write-up when Paul Wade visited for Telegraph Travel, describing the Main River financial hub as “pivotal to Germany’s history” after exploring its cultural riches.
13. Washington DC, US
Perhaps the political powerhouse of the world is deemed unfriendly because everyone is too busy running the world? Either way, it’s a city that must be at top of the list for any tourist interested in American history, despite its unfriendliness.
12. Miami, Florida
Stephen Fry described the American city as a hole full of “horrible, horrible concrete buildings” – but it’s well regarded for its flashy playground atmopshere and sandy beaches, depending on what you’re in to.
Our expert recommends going for its natural beauty, cosmopolitan vibe and beach lifestyle. If only the people were friendlier.
11. Beijing, China
Our Telegraph Travel expert has described the Chinese capital as “smoggy chaos” oft-bemoaned for its ugliness. No wonder the locals aren’t friendly…
10. Cannes, France
In at ten, it’s the French city renowned for its annual film festival and association with the rich and famous. Our expert Anthony Peregrine has mixed feelings on the place, which he describes as “all fur coat and no knickers”.
9. Las Vegas, US
The affectionately named Sin City may be an ideal destination for a variety of vices but it is apparently not so well-versed in manners, according to the survey.
8. Baltimore, US
Not entirely surprising that the city made famous by gritty crime series The Wire, is not judged to be entirely friendly. It is, however, the birthplace of the American anthem and flag.
7. Philadelphia, US
Another American city. Our writer Kathy Arnold said last year that the City of Brotherly Love was experiencing a cultural renaissance and now offers much more than just the Liberty Bell.
6. New York, US
The Big Apple has been given a dressing down and is apparently the sixth most unfriendly city in the world – at least it’s not in the top five and not even close to being the most unfriendly American city.
5. Los Angeles, US
Gwyneth Paltrow and Hugh Laurie may be fans of the place, but LA is reportedly the fifth most unfriendly city on the planet.
4. Marseille, France
France’s oldest city hasn’t learnt its manners yet, but after spending the 20th century in decline it is now trying to fly right, according to our expert out there, Anthony Peregrine.
3. St Petersburg, Russia
Supposedly Russia’s window to Europe and most laid-back city, it’s a surprising entry in at number three. This is where Russians are meant to be at their friendliest.
2. Atlantic City, US
The Las Vegas of the East Coast received a better write-up from Sonia Juttla, writing for The Telegraph’s Stella magazine. She recommended securing digs at The Chelsea (“where young, hip New Yorkers stay”), dinner at Wolfgang’s Puck’s restaurant at the Borgata casino, and drinks in the “chintzy but fabulous” Irish Pub.
1. Moscow, Russia
And the most unfriendly city in the world is… the Russian capital. Our expert describes the place as “one of Europe’s most vibrant cities – a sprawling metropolis of more than 10 million people, packed with nightclubs, bars and shopping centres”. But it seems the readers of Travel+Leisure thought otherwise.
