Indira Gandhi

ndira Gandhi at the Jaipur Session of the Indian National Congress in 1966. February 12th. It was at this session of the Congress that Indira Gandhi, now under challenge from the old guard of the Congress (Kamraj was the Congress President), first publicly stated that the Congress 'has certainly moved away from the people' and suggested 'the mass uplift of the people'. The previous day, in the meeting of the Subjects Committee, the old guard of the Congress had criticised Indira intensely for trying to make the Congress a more socialist party. Indira in response pointed out that the needs of the country-- serious shortages of food and almost all resources-- could not be met by giving a free run to private entrepreneurs to make profit.
