ஆக்ஸ்போர்டு பல்கலைக்கழகம், கேம்ப்ரிட்ஜ் பல்கலைக்கழகம் - University of Oxford, University of Cambridge .

பிரிட்டன் செல்கின்ற போதெல்லாம் ஆக்ஸ்போர்ட் பல்கலைக்கழகத்திற்கும், கேம்ப்ரிட்ஜ் பல்கலைக் கழகத்திற்கும், லண்டனில் உள்ள ஹைட்பார்க்கிற்கும் செல்வது ஒரு வாடிக்கை. அது என்னமோ தெரியவில்லை.  தென்னிந்தியாவின் ஆக்ஸ்போர்டு என்றழைக்கப்படும் பாளையங்கோட்டையில் படித்ததின் காரணமாக, கேம்ப்ரிட்ஜ் மீதும் ஆக்ஸ்போர்ட்மீதும் ஒரு ஈர்ப்பு உண்டு.















1974 காலகட்டங்களில், டெல்லியில் உள்ள ஜவஹர்லால் நேரு பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் முதுகலை ஆந்திரஃபாலஜி வகுப்பில் சேர்ந்து ஒருமாதம் படித்துக்கொண்டிருக்கும் பொழுது,  சென்னை சட்டக்கல்லூரியில் படிக்க அனுமதி கிடைத்தது.  மாணவர் பருவத்தின்  அரசியல் வேகத்தினால் அப்போது இரண்டுநாட்களாக ஒரு முடிவும் எடுக்க முடியாத மனநிலை.

டெல்லி ஜவஹர்லால் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் தொடர்ந்து படிப்பதா? அல்லது சென்னை சட்டக்கல்லூரியில் சென்று சேர்வதா என்று முடிவு எடுக்க முடியாது திண்டாடினேன். ஏனெனில் ஆக்ஸ்போர்டும் கேம்ப்ரிட்ஜுக்கும் படிக்கச் செல்ல முடியாத சூழல் அரசியல் அனைத்து கல்வித்துறைகளும் அமைந்த ஒருங்கிணைந்த நவீன இந்தியாவின்  பெரிய ஆக்ஸ்போர்டு, கேம்ப்ரிட்ஜ் போன்ற பல்கலைக்கழகம் டெல்லி ஜவஹர்லால் நேரு பல்கலைக்கழகம் ஆகும்.   எனவே அங்கிருந்து வர மனம் வரவில்லை.

நக்சலைட்டுகள் முதல் அனைத்துக்கட்சி அமைப்புகளும் மாணவர்களிடையே இருந்தது. தினமும் விவாதங்கள், பிரச்சனைகள் குறித்து கருத்தரங்கங்கள் என நடந்தவண்ணம் இருக்கும். பல்வேறு அரசியல் சிந்தனைகள் கொள்கைகள் கொண்டவர்கள் அங்கே படித்தார்கள். அங்கே படித்த பலரும் இந்தியாவின் தலைவர்கள் ஆனார்கள்.

இரண்டுநாள் யோசனைக்குப் பிறகு, ஆந்திரஃபாலஜியை விட
சட்டம் படிப்பது நல்லது என்று சென்னைக்கு வந்துவிட்டேன். அது ஒரு இழப்பாகவே இன்றைக்குவரை மனதில் இருக்கின்றது. எனவே ஆக்ஸ்போர்டு, கேம்ப்ரிட்ஜ் பல்கலைக்கழகங்களைப் பார்த்தால் ஒரு பிரமிப்பு. அங்கு அமைந்துள்ள 16ம் நூற்றாண்டிலிருந்து கட்டப்பட்டுள்ள பிரம்மாண்ட கட்டிடங்களுடைய ஈர்ப்பு, இயற்கைச்சூழல். கல்வியின் ஆளுமை  என்பது மனதை ஈர்க்கும்.

இப்படியான சூழ்நிலையில் பல நூற்றாண்டுகளாக, பல கவிஞர்கள், அறிஞர்கள், விஞ்ஞானிகள், நாட்டின் தலைவர்கள், எனப்பல ஆளுமைகளை வார்த்தெடுத்ததுதான் ஆக்ஸ்போர்டும், கேம்ப்ரிட்ஜும் .
இந்த இரண்டு பல்கலைக்கழகங்களும் உலகிற்கு இயற்கை வழங்கிய அருட்கொடைகள்.

பாளையங்கோட்டையில் படித்த அனைவருக்கும் ஏதோ ஒரு இனம் தெரியாத பற்று ஆக்ஸ்போர்டு மீதோ, கேம்ப்ரிட்ஜின் மீதோ இருப்பதை நான் உணர்ந்துள்ளேன். இந்த சூழ்நிலையில் இவை நான் பிரிட்டன் போகும் போதெல்லாம் செல்லும் யாத்திரை ஸ்தலங்கள் மட்டுமல்ல புண்ணிய பூமியும் ஆகும்.

இந்தியாவில் கல்வியை வணிகமயமாக்கிவிட்டோம். ஆனால் இந்த இரண்டு பல்கலைக்கழகங்களும், மனிதநேயத்தோடு மனிதவளத்தைப் பெருக்கும் தூண்களாக விளங்குகின்றது.  இவ்விரு பல்கலைக் கழகங்களுக்கும் நாம் சல்யூட் அடிக்க வேண்டும்.

எவ்வளவோ ஆராய்ச்சிகள், நுண்மான்நுலைபுலமான கல்விச் சிந்தனைகளோடு எவ்வளவு அபாரமான கல்விப்பணிகள் அங்கே நடக்கின்றதென்பதை அறியும் போது நம்மை வியக்கச் செய்கிறது.

இதுபோல உலகம் வியக்கும்வண்ணம்  “யேல்” போன்ற  பல பல்கலைக்கழகங்களும் பல புதிய சிந்தனைகளோடு உலக வளர்ச்சிக்கு தொண்டாற்றுகின்றன இதை நாம் கோவில்களாக வணங்க வேண்டும்.

அதேபோல இந்த இடத்தில் லண்டனில் உள்ள ஹைட்பார்க் பற்றியும்  சொல்லவேண்டும். இந்தப் பூங்காவிற்குச் சென்று சின்னத் திண்டுகளுக்கு மேல் ஏறி என்னப் பேச விரும்புகிறீர்களோ அதைப் பேசலாம். இது ஜனநாயகத்தின் அடிப்படைக் கூறுக்கான ஒரு பரந்த மனதுடைய நிலைப்பாட்டை உருவாக்கும் தளமாகும்.

அங்கிருந்து இங்கிலாந்து ராணியோ, இங்கிலாந்து பிரதமரையோ யாரையும் விமர்சிக்கலாம், இதுகுறித்து யாரும் கேள்வி எழுப்பமாட்டார்கள். பேச்சுரிமைக்காக அமைந்த ஒரு பூங்காதான் ஹைட் பார்க். அதேபோல ஷேக்ஸ்பியருடைய பிறந்த இல்லம், கார்ல் மார்க்ஸ் கல்லறை, வடக்கே சென்றால் ஸ்காட்லாந்து பகுதியில் உள்ள மலைப்பாங்கான ரம்மியனான பகுதிகள் இவையாவும் பிரிட்டனில் நேசிக்கும் இடங்களாக இருந்தாலும் ஜீவனுள்ள, அதிர்வையும் அசைவையும் தருகின்ற ஆக்ஸ்போர்டும், கேம்ப்ரிட்ஜும் தான் மனத்தைக் கவர்ந்த இடங்களாகும்.

நமது முன்னாள் பிரதமர் மன்மோகன்சிங் ஒரு அதிர்ஷ்டசாலி, ஏனென்றால் அவர் அங்கே படித்தவர். அங்கே படிக்கச் செல்ல முடியவில்லையே என்ற ஆதங்கம் வாழ்வின் எஞ்சிய காலங்களில் எதிரொலித்துக் கொண்டே இருக்கிறது.
