The idea of a distinct coffee house for Indians took root in the 1930s in response to the racist colonial position that disallowed Indians to come to a coffee house frequented by the English. The Coffee Cess Committee then decided to popularise the drink among Indians by opening the first coffee house in 1936 at Mumbai. Coffee had been a drink of choice in south India since the 18th century, some two centuries after it was first introduced. Soon some 50 branches of the Coffee House had been opened across the country. In the 1950s, the Coffee Board decided to shut down the coffee houses. The workers would be rendered jobless. A K Gopalan, the communist leader, suggested to the workers that they cut a deal with the Coffee Board. The result was that the chain of coffee houses was handed over the newly formed Indian Coffee Workers' Co-operatives. The outlets were renamed the network as Indian Coffee House. These were run by independent cooperatives under the general umbrella of a federation of coffee houses.

The coffee house at Thampanoor, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, the Maveli Cafe (in pic.) is a spiral structure designed by the architect Laurie Baker known for his marvellous environment friendly mud brick structures.
