Is Bharathi a great poet:  A controversy that raged in the 1930s 

C. Subramania Bharathiyar or Bharathi has been hailed as ‘Mahakavi’ on a par with classical world poets such as Kalidas, Shakespeare, Shelley. 

But back in the 1930s, he was not acknowledged as a great poet though accepted as a poet. 

A great controversy raged in the Tamil literary world then over the question if Bharathi is a great poet. 

It all started with a public statement made by Va Raa (V. Ramaswami AyyangarA),  editor of Manikodi and later Sri Lanka-based Veerakesari, that the works of Shakespeare, Shelley and Tagore, if clubbed together, will not match the astounding writings of Bharati.

Then in the Ananda Vikatan, edited by Kalki (R. Krishnamurthi), dated November 3, 1935, Kalki answered a reader’s innocuous question if Va.Raa’s statement about Bharathi’s greatness was right.  Terming Va.Raa’s assertion wrong, Kalki went to the extent of saying that anyone who made such a glorifying statement about Bharathi should be called ‘nirathcharakutchi’  (lliterate man).

Later, Kalki condescended to accept Bharathi as a good people but he was not ready to hail the poet on a par with the likes of the classical great poets. 

In the ensuing debate  that  set the Tamil world of poetry divided into  two camps for and against Bharathi, Kalki’s  criticism of the poet touched a new high with his statement that had Tolstoy happened to read Bharathi’s  poem about Valli , the Russian writer would have burnt all of Bharathi’s works. For Kalki considered Valli as erotic. 

Kalki’s criticism had lovers of Bharathi including the Manikodi writers such as Va.Raa, K.P.Rajagopalan (Ku. Pa. Raa)  raging.

Ku. Pa.Raa spoke about the best in Bharati.  Similarly, all opposed to Kalki joined hands, writing in journals  like Swadeshamithran, Ananda Vikatan,  Dinamani, Manikodi etc. highlighting how Bharati towers above all world poets. 

It is an irony of time that the same Kalki who could not accept Bharati as a great poet, later  built the Bharati memorial at Ettayapuram, the Bard’s home town.

             பாரதி மகாகவியா? 1930 களில் வெடித்த சர்ச்சை….. 

காளிதாஸ், ஷேக்ஸ்பியர், ஷெல்லி போன்ற செவ்வியல் உலகக் கவிஞர்களுக்கு இணையாக சி.சுப்பிரமணிய பாரதியார் அல்லது பாரதி 'மகாகவி' என்று போற்றப்படுகிறார். 

ஆனால், 1930-களில் கவிஞராக ஏற்றுக் கொள்ளப்பட்டாலும், அவர் ஒரு சிறந்த கவிஞராக அங்கீகரிக்கப்படவில்லை. 

பாரதி சிறந்த கவிஞரா என்ற கேள்வி தமிழ் இலக்கிய உலகில் அப்போது பெரும் சர்ச்சையை ஏற்படுத்தியது. 

ஷேக்ஸ்பியர், ஷெல்லி, தாகூர் ஆகியோரின் படைப்புகளை ஒன்றிணைத்தால் கூட பாரதியின் வியக்கத்தக்க எழுத்துக்களுக்கு அவை இணையாகாது என்று மணிக்கொடியின் ஆசிரியரும் பின்னர் இலங்கையைச் சேர்ந்த வீரகேசரியின் ஆசிரியருமான வ.ரா (வ. ராமசாமி அய்யங்கார்) பகிரங்கமாக ஒரு கூட்டத்தில் பேசினார்.

 பின்னர் 1935 நவம்பர் 3 தேதியிட்ட ஆனந்த விகடனில்,  பாரதியின் மகத்துவத்தைப் பற்றி வ.ரா கூறிய கருத்து சரியா என்று வாசகர் ஒருவர் கேட்ட  கேள்விக்குப் பதிலளித்த கல்கி (இரா. கிருஷ்ணமூர்த்தி),   வ.ரா.வின் கூற்று தவறு என்றும், பாரதியைப் பற்றி இப்படிப் புகழ்ந்து பேசுபவனைத் தற்குறி என்று அழைக்க வேண்டும் என்றும் சொன்னார்.

பின்னாளில், கல்கி பாரதியை ஒரு நல்ல கவியாக ஏற்றுக் கொண்டார்; ஆனால் மகாகவிகளுக்கு இணையான கவிஞராகப் பாராட்ட அவர் தயாராக இல்லை

பாரதிக்கு ஆதரவாகவும் எதிராகவும் தமிழ்க் கவிதை உலகை இரண்டாகப் பிளவுபடுத்திய விவாதத்தில், வள்ளியைப் பற்றிய பாரதியின் கவிதையை டால்ஸ்டாய் படிக்க நேர்ந்திருந்தால், அந்த ரஷ்ய எழுத்தாளர் பாரதியின் படைப்புகள் அனைத்தையும் எரித்திருப்பார் என்ற தனது கூற்றின் மூலம் கவிஞர் குறித்த கல்கியின் விமர்சனம் புதிய உச்சத்தைத் தொட்டது.   பாரதியின் வள்ளி கவிதையைப் பாலியல் தன்மைக் கொண்டதாகக் கல்கி கருதினார். 

கல்கியின் இந்த விமர்சனத்தால் மணிக்கொடி எழுத்தாளர்களான வ.ரா, கு.ப.ராஜகோபாலன் (கு.ப.ரா) உள்ளிட்ட பாரதியின் அபிமானிகள் கொந்தளித்தனர்.

கு.ப.ரா பாரதியின் படைப்புச் சிறப்புக்களைப் பற்றிப் பேசினார்.  அதேபோல் கல்கியை எதிர்த்த அனைவரும் கைகோர்த்து சுதேசமித்திரன், ஆனந்த விகடன், தினமணி, மணிக்கொடி போன்ற இதழ்களில் எழுதினர்.  பாரதி எப்படி உலகக்கவிஞர்களை விட உயர்ந்தவர் என்பதை அவர்கள் விதந்தோதினர்.  

பாரதியை ஒரு சிறந்த கவிஞராக ஏற்றுக் கொள்ள முடியாத அதே கல்கிதான் பின்னாளில் பாரதியின் சொந்த ஊரான எட்டயபுரத்தில் பாரதி நினைவிடத்தைக் கட்டினார் என்பது காலத்தின் நகைமுரண்.
