Elections and India

It is extended election season in India. The conclusion of elections would be when new governments take over. In one state, one of the competing parties has gone to Supreme Court on the plea that the party with the largest number of seats in the legislative assembly has not been asked to form a government. In that context, someone asked: can history throw some light? Here is a collection of facts that might help one to make a decision. Of course, the ultimate decision rests on the ruling of the Supreme Court of India since it has been able to decide on the validity of the decision of the Governor to ask the party that claims highest support in the vidhan sabha.

In 1996, Atal Bihari Vajapayee lead BJP won highest number of seats - still they couldn't form govt as Atal Bihari Vajpayee couldn't get allies but 

Not fully true .Atal Bihari Vajpayee formed the government.But it lasted for 13 days .

In 1996, A coalition lead by Deve Gowda with 17 MPs and outside support from Congress formed the Govt 

In 1998, BJP again won highest number of MP seats 

But fell short of 272 by 1 vote when AIADMK suddenly backed out on the day of voting 

The BJP govt fell in 13 months 

In 2013, in Delhi,  BJP was party with highest number of votes 

But still AAP and Congress formed a govt as their coalition had majority 

In 2002, National conference had highest number of seats in Kashmir 

But PDP and Congress formed Government.
