Election campaign where Jawaharlal Nehru Lost to a young Partap Singh Kairon
The Elections of 1937 were important for the Congress to show that it ruled the hearts of Indians. From the constituency of Sarhali the Grand Old Man of Punjab, Baba Gurdit Singh 'Komagatamaru' was contesting. Nehru wanted Baba Gurdit Singh to win. Twice he came to Sarhali to request voters to vote for Baba Gurdit Singh.
Challenging Baba Gurdit Singh was the young Partap Singh Kairon. Kairon was known to be a no sort of person who got work done. People voted for him. He got more than two thirds of the votes polled. This was Partap Singh's first victory. He would have many in the next three decades.
Kairon' s end was pathetic. Many allegations. Fist CM to face commission of enquiry. Sssassinated by Sucha Singh Bassi, in his car on the main highway to Amritsar.
