#Shyama Prasad Mukherjee. #370 Verdict #Jammu &Kashmir

#370 Verdict #Jammu &Kashmir

Dr.Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, union minister for industries in Pt Nehru’s cabinet, voice chancellor of Calcutta university,an academician, a scholar, and a nationalist, died a martyr’s death trying to unite the country.

A brief bit on Shyama Prasad Mukherjee-

His association with the Hindu Mahasabha is a well known fact.  He had joined the Mahasabha to counter Mus¡im League’s communal politics. While initially SP Mukherjee was against partition, it were the horrific incidents of the D¡rect Act¡on Day and Noakha!i r¡ots (1946) that completely changed his views and he turned in favour of partit¡on and a Hindu West Bengal.

After independence, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, joined the Union Cabinet as Minister for Industries & Supplies, but became the first minister to resign in 1950 over the Nehru-Liaqat Ali Pact, an agreement which he strongly opposed and viewed as gross appeasement.

In October 1951 SP Mukherjee formed the Bharatiya Jan Sangh, after consulting with Guru Golwalkar. The main ideological points of BJS as prepared by Shyama Prasad Mukherjee were:

1. Uniform Civil Code for all citizens of India,
2. Scrapping of Article 370, and complete integration of Jammu & Kashmir with the Indian Union, and
3. A ban on Cow Slaughter.

In 1953, SP Mukherjee decided to visit Jammu to show solidarity with the Praja Parishad,  who were demanding full integration of Jammu & Kashmir with the Indian Union. However, owing to Kashmir’s special status, Indian citizens were not allowed to enter the state without prior permission. The Prime Minister of Kashmir had supreme powers to decide who could enter the state, and this was protested by Mukherjee. He had then famously said: “Ek desh mein do Vidhan, do Pradhan aur Do Nishan nahi chalega.”

SP Mukherjee proceeded to enter Kashmir illegally on May 1953, and was arrested on 11th May 1953, along with Guru Dutt Vaid and Tekchand Sharma. Initially he was put into a prison in Srinagar, but later transferred to a house outside Srinagar, where he suddenly fell ill. On 19th June he was diagnosed with “dry pleurisy and coronary troubles”.  Doctor Ali Mohammed administered him a streptomycin injection, despite Mukherjee telling him that streptomycin did not suit him. The doctor however managed to reassure Mukherjee that the drug would cause no harm as per new studies. On 22nd June Mukherjee started feeling pain in his chest (heart area) and was shifted to a hospital.  Just one nurse Rajdulari Tikoo was put on duty, and as his condition worsened, she called Dr. Jagannath Zutshi.

However his health worsened, and on June 23th 1953 around 2:25AM, he was declared dead of a “heart attack”. Only few believed the story of his sudden “natural death”, and his mother Jogamaya Devi along with others asked for an enquiry into his suspicious death.

Finally his wishes are being fulfilled.
