Countess de Markievicz

In 1927 Countess de Markievicz died. She was the first female MP, but she did not take her seat. A member of Sinn Fein, she played a part in the Easter Rising of 1916 and stood for election for a seat in Dublin whilst in prison in London in December 1918. It was the Parliament (Qualification of Women) Act 1918 that amended the law to allow women to sit in.
