Sheikh Abdullah, the popular leader of Kashmir, announces that Kashmir and India are one. Nehru, his friend and then the premier of India, stands by his side. Sheikh Abdullah's party workers had been armed by the Indian army to defend themselves against the marauding Pakistani army that had reached the outskirts of Srinagar.

November 1947: Sheikh Abdullah reveals that Pakistan had said that it would agree to a #referendum only if the Sheikh promised that the people of Kashmir will vote for Pakistan. Sheikh Abdullah said that the people will whole heartedly vote for India and stand with India. He explained that participating in fair elections will automatically be a ratification of the people's desire to be part of the Indian union.
