How did the Jana Gana
Man become a popular song among the nationalists?
The song Jana Gana
Mana had been published under the title Bharat vidhata in the magazine
Tattvabodhini Patrika in January 1912. In 1917, at the conference of the INC at
Calcutta it was sung for a second time by Sarla Devi Chawdharani, the niece of
Rabindra Nath Tagore. Musical notes were provided by Maharaja Bahadur of
Nattore.
Tagore had penned the
song in 1911 and it had been sung on that occasion too at the INC session
(Calcutta) by Sarla Devi. Annie Besant was the president of the INC in 1917.
She was also the President of the Theosophical Society.
In 1919, Tagore spent
five days at the Theosophical College at Madanapalle in Andhra Pradesh. The
Irish poet James H. Cousins was the principal.
On the evening of
February 28, 1919, the poet, for the first time, sang the inspiring devotional
song and enthralled the college authorities, who selected it as the prayer
song. This would have been the first large scale public approval for the song
outside of the Congress circles.
Tagore subsequently
translated the lyrics into English and with the help of Cousins' wife,
Margaret, who was an expert in western music, set down the notation which is
being followed till today.
