Thirumalai Nayakar started building a giant Raya Gopuram during his twilight years, in front of East Gopuram of Madurai Meenakshi temple. He couldn’t complete it.
During 1755, Madurai was ruled by one Mafuz Khan. At that time, one person from the ‘other’ faith started building a cottage on top of the incomplete Raya Gopuram. This has blocked the movement of devotees towards the temple. They requested the person to stop the construction but he was not relenting. For obvious reasons, the ruler didn’t help them either.
