PROCLAMATION

Votes for women! This banner was unfurled from the Ladies' Gallery in the chamber of the House of Commons during a protest on 28 October 1908 known as the Grille Incident. The names of the suffragettes involved in this were Muriel Matters and Helen Fox, who chained themselves to the ironwork grille of the Ladies' Gallery and had to be filed off, while Violet Tillard dropped the banner into the chamber.
