சென்னை எழும்பூரில் இருந்து இலங்கை தலைமன்னார் வரை........

போட் மெயில் (பிற்காலத்தில் இராமேஸ்வரம் எக்ஸ்பிரஸ் ) என்ற புகைவண்டியில் பெரும்பாலும் இலங்கைத் தமிழர்கள் தான் பயணிப்பார்கள். சென்னை எழும்பூரில் இருந்து இலங்கை தலைமன்னார் வரை பயணச்சீட்டை வாங்கிக் கொண்டு போட் மெயில் வண்டியில் தனுஷ்கோடி வரை பயணப்பட்டு, அங்கிருந்து படகுகள் மூலம் (Ferry Service) இலங்கை வரை செல்வார்கள். இலங்கைக்கு விமானத்தில் செல்ல வேண்டுமென்றால் நேரடியாக செல்ல முடியாது. தலைநகர் கொழும்புக்கு தான் செல்லவேண்டும். ஆனால் அதைவிட இந்த மார்க்கத்தில் எளிதாக யாழ்ப்பாணம், மட்டக்களப்பு, திரிகோணமலை ஆகிய பகுதிகளை அடைந்துவிடலாம்.  

அந்த காலங்களில் இலங்கையிலிருந்து பயணப்பட்டு வருபவர்கள் இராணி சோப்பு, தேயிலைத் தூள் போன்றவற்றை வியாபாரத்திற்காகவும், உறவினர்கள், நண்பர்களுக்காகவும் எடுத்து வருவர். இங்கிருந்து செல்பவர்கள் கைலி (சாரம்), பான்ட்ஸ் பவுடர், பீடி கட்டுகள், துணிமணிகள், பாய் ஆகியவற்றை எடுத்துக் கொண்டு செல்வதையெல்லாம் பார்க்கலாம். சுமார் 54 ஆண்டுகள் முன் தனுஷ்கோடி பெரும்புயலால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டது. அதனால் தனுஷ்கோடிக்கு இரயில் சேவை நிறுத்தப்பட்டது. இன்றைக்கு வரலாற்று செய்தியாகவே உள்ளது.

Ferry service from Dhanushkodi Pier to Talaimannar in the 1950s - In the 1950s, there was much traffic between India and Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) by land and sea. The Boat Mail train, aka the Indo-Ceylon Express plied between  Madras and Dhanushkodi on the Bay of Bengal. It took almost 19 hours to complete the journey of 675 kilometers.The era of the Boat Mail came to an end after a cyclonic storm with high-speed winds, and high tidal waves struck South India and northern Ceylon between December 22 and 25, 1964. The entire town of Dhanushkodi was completely submerged with heavy casualties. The railway line running from Pamban Station to Dhanushkodi Pier was destroyed, and a passenger train with over 100 passengers drowned in the sea.Years later, the name of the train changed from Indo-Ceylon Express to Rameswaram Express.

In the context of Indo-Ceylon Express, there was a very famous or should it be gruesomely notoriius murder case of the 1950s called Alavandar murder case. A China Bazaar pen show room owner was murdered by his wife Devaki and her illicite paramour and the body packed into a steel trunk and it was sent off by this train. The Madras Presidency  Police who were a premier law maintaining establishment of the British India solved the case immediately.
