One of the best-known Telugu performing arts is Kuchipudi, a classical dance tradition that developed in Andhra Pradesh. Other traditional forms include Burrakatha, Oggu Katha and Tholu Bommalata, the traditional shadow-puppet theatre. Telugu cuisine is equally distinctive. Rice is an important staple, while many dishes are known for their use of chilli and spices. Andhra and Telangana developed their own regional culinary traditions, reflecting the different landscapes and histories of Telugu-speaking areas. Telugu people also developed distinctive forms of clothing, festivals and religious traditions. Ugadi, the Telugu New Year, as well as Sankranti, Bonalu and other festivals continue to play an important role in Telugu cultural life. In the modern world, Telugu-speaking communities have spread far beyond India. Large Telugu populations now live in countries including the United States, Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Myanmar, Australia, Canada, Singapore, the United Kingdom and several other countries. There is also a Telugu community in Sri Lanka. Although much smaller than the major Telugu populations of India, Sri Lankan Telugus form another part of the island's diverse history. The story of the Telugu people is therefore not simply the story of a language or a region in southern India. It is a story of ancient kingdoms, literature, art, religion, migration, trade and political connections that reached across the Indian Ocean. For Sri Lanka, the most remarkable chapter may be the story of the Kandyan Nayaks, people of Telugu origin who became kings of the last independent kingdom of the island. Their history reminds us that Sri Lanka's past was shaped not only by people born on the island, but also by communities who arrived from different parts of Asia, settled here, married into local society and eventually became part of the country's own story. How many people in Sri Lanka know that the last royal dynasty of the Kingdom of Kandy was of Telugu origin? Do you know of any Sri Lankan family with Telugu ancestry or a connection to the Kandyan Nayak period? I would love to hear your stories and memories in the comments. #TeluguPeople #TeluguHistory #SriLankaHistory #KandyanNayaks #KandyKingdom #AndhraHistory #TeluguCulture #SriLankanHeritage #ForgottenHistory #HiddenHistory #CeylonHistory #SriLanka
