With the death of Pranab Mukherjee, the former President of India,a long chapter of Indian politics comes to an end.
Some persons are born great, on some person greatness is thrust upon ,whereas some persons achieve greatness by hard work, sincerity and honesty.Late Pranab Mukherjee is a live example.
Pranab Mukherjee was born in remote village in Birbhum, studied in a village school. He was an ordinary student and passed out with lackluster result both in school and university. However he was always a good organizer who looked into minutest detail, whenever he was given any responsibly. At the age of 31 he became the Principal of a newly established college.
When Ajay Mukherjee, the veteran Congress leader from West Bengal was rusticated from his party,he decided to form a new political party and requested Pranab's father to joi,a veteran Congressman to join him.His father K.Mukherjee refused to join because of his old age but persuaded his young son Pranab to join and assist Ajay Mukherjee in establishing the new party.Pranab became a trusted lieutenant of Ajay Mukherjee because of diligence, hard work and honesty. When Ajay Mukherjee became CM for the second time in 1969,after his coalition received thumping mandate,Ajay Mukherjee nominated Pranab Mukherjee for a Rajya Sabha seat. Thus the long parliamentary career of Mukherjee bagan, which lasted for nearly 43 years till 2012,when he became the President of India. In 1971,Ajay Mukherjee merged his party with the Congress headed by Indira Gandhi and Pranab became a Rajya Sabha Member of the Congress Party.
Pranab was always very meticulous and worked hard as a Parliamentarian, soon he attracted the attention of the then PM Indira Gandhi after he delivered a speech on industrial development.Indira decided to invite Pranab to her cabinet as a Deputy Minister of Industries, and he made the beginning of his ministerial career at the centre.Indira was so impressed with his performance both as a Minister and Parliamentarian, she decided to give her the independent charge of Banking in 1975,as Minister of State. When Congress was defeated in 1977,Pranab was harassed by the new Government but he remained to loyal to Congress and to Indira. In January 1980 ,Indira Gandhi came back to power, with brute majority, although Pranab was defeated from Birbhum by more than 1 lakh votes.Indira was upset but decided to retain his service and made him a Cabinet Minister in charge of Commerce and Steel. In 1982,he was given the charge of the Ministry of Finance .He became the youngest Finance Minister and remained as FM till the end of December 1984.During his short stint as FM,he did commendable work to tone up the country's economy and was adjudged the best Finance Minister in the Commonwealth.
After the death of Indira ,her son Rajiv Gandhi succeeded him. However their equation did not work and Pranab was axed from his cabinet and ultimately from Congress.
Pranab decided to try his luck and formed a new party ,but his experiment did not work and ultimately he was taken back in his old Congress Party.Rajiv Gandhi realised his mistake of discarding a tried and tested leader like Pranab and stated giving his responsibility to tone up the party, after getting defeated in the election in 1989.Rajiv was assassinated by LTTE in 1991 and the senior most leader of the party PV Narsima Rao,became the Congress President and Prime Minister.Rao was a very matured
politician and he knew the worth of his former colleague Pranab...Pranab was made the Dy Chairman of the Planning Commission and later on appointed as Minister of External Affairs. He carried on both the responsibilities simultaneously and was adjudged as one of the best Ministers of External Affairs.
When the UPA coalition headed by Congress came to power in 2004,there were two contenders for the post of PM after the Party President Sonia Gandhi declined to become PM..Pranab Mukherjee & Arjun Singh.Sonia surprisingly offered the position to much junior Dr Mana Mohan Singh, who had earlier served under Pranab Mukherjee first as Finance Secretary and later on RBI Governor. In the new Cabinet Pranab was made Minister of Defence.Later on he became the Minister of External Affairs for the second time.In both the Ministries he served commendably .In 2009 ,he became the Finance Minister once again and remained in that position till July 2012,when he was nominated as his party's candidate for the post of President.
Mr Mukherjee, then Finance Minister, headed over 100 parliamentary committees at one time, which was seen as a measure of his importance in the government. He also remained the Congress's chief troubleshooter and the party's Mr Dependable until he became President.
He took oath as the 13th P{resident in August 2012 and served the full term of 5 years.Even after relinquishing his position as President,he was regularly consulted by the Prime Minister on the political and diplomatic affairs. It was he who advised Modi to invite the Prime Ministers of the neighbouring countries ,to attend the oath taking ceremony.
From 2004 to 2012,he acted as the leader of the Lok Sabha which position he served with distinction.Between 1980 to 1984,he served as the leader of the Upper House.
One of the country's most widely-respected politicians, he was, to all across party lines, "Pranab-da", the man who knew his constitution, with five decades of political and administrative experience, and political acumen that made him all-round problem solver. He was among the sharpest minds in his field, with an understanding of politics, economic policies as well as strategic issues.
After hi s tenure as President was over ,he did not rejoin in active politics but acted as the elder statesman .In his death the country lost a great parliamentarian,an able administrator and an ace diplomat. He was one of the very few political leaders who was respected and trusted by every one irrespective of political affiliation. He will be remembered for his great contribution to the cause of his nation.
