The cornerstone for the Statue of Liberty was laid on Bedloe's Island (now Liberty Island) #onthisday in 1884.
While it was agreed that the American people were to build the pedestal, the Statue itself was designed by sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi in France and completed there in July 1884. It arrived in New York in June 1885. This article from the ‘Scientific American Supplement’, includes an illustration showing 'the great Statue of Liberty…ready in Paris for shipment to New York.'
