Indira Gandhi's election from Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh was declared void by the High Court of Allahabad on the basis of electoral malpractice. On June 12, 1975, Justice Jagmohan Lal Sinha of the Allahabad High Court ruled that Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's victory in the 1971 parliamentary election was invalid. In the 1971 general election, Indira Gandhi won victory in the Rae Bareli constituency by securing more than one lakh votes over her rival Raj Narayanan. Raj Narayanan filed a case alleging that she had engaged in electoral malpractices in the 1971 election. Yashpal Kapoor, who served as Indira Gandhi's election agent, was a government employee who was drawing a salary from the central government fund. According to the Representation of the People Act, government employees are not allowed to serve as election agents. Therefore, Raj Narayanan had stated in his petition that Indira Gandhi's victory in that election was invalid. After the trial of this case concluded, on June 12, 1975, Justice Jagmohan Lal Sinha of the Allahabad High Court announced his judgment. Based on Section 123, Clause 7 of the Representation of the People Act, the judge ruled that Indira's victory was invalid and also noted in his judgment that she would be disqualified from contesting elections for the next six years. As a result, opposition parties insisted that she must step down from office. To manage these crises and bolster her own power, Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency (MISA) on June 25.
